The organization holds free, daily meetings in Sunnyside and nearly every other city in the world. There are no prerequisites for membership. Anyone who wants to quit drinking and stay sober is welcome.
In these meetings, alcoholics from all different backgrounds come together. They unite over the common experience of addiction. They share stories. They talk about their lives. They update each other on the progress of their recovery. Ultimately, each person learns to have compassion for themselves and others as they work toward maintaining a sober life.
The organization is founded around the Twelve Steps. This is a century-old system designed to help people overcome their addictive behavior. Every member works through these Steps at their own pace. Members are welcome to attend as many or as few meetings as they wish.

It differs from Alcoholics Anonymous in that it is designed for people who are addicted to drugs instead of booze. In a typical meeting, it’s common to find people who struggle with addictions to everything from marijuana to fentanyl. There are NA members who are addicted to cocaine, heroin, crystal meth, prescription pills, and nearly every other drug out there.
In cases where an addict lacks access to an NA meeting, they are welcomed in AA. However, it’s helpful for addicts to meet and connect with others who’ve struggled with the same habits as them. Luckily, there are plenty of Narcotics Anonymous meetings in Sunnyside and other nearby cities.

Some addicts are hesitant to dive into the Twelve Steps. Both AA and NA are commonly misconstrued as being religious organizations. This is mostly due to the fact that Step Two of the Twelve Steps asks members to turn their faith over to a “higher power”. Many people misunderstand this to mean that members are required to believe in God.
Fortunately, there is SMART Recovery. This is a popular alternative to Twelve Step programs like AA and NA.
In the SMART program, recovering addicts learn about the science of addiction. They work with facilitators to develop techniques for avoiding triggers. They also learn how to manage cravings and cope with stress without using.
Like other recovery programs, SMART is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome as long as they have a strong desire to get sober.

Addiction affects everyone around the addict. It impacts the lives of their family and friends as much as it does their own.
When someone is a drug addict or alcoholic, their parents, spouse, children, siblings, and friends suffer just like they do. It causes these family members to feel complex emotions. The feel fear, guilt, shame, embarrassment, and anger, sometimes all at once. These feelings can be overwhelming.
Luckily, there’s Al-Anon.
This organization is a support network for people who love addicts. The hold daily meetings in cities all over the world. In these meetings, the family members of addicts get together. They talk about how their loved ones’ addictions have affected their lives. Members listen to other people’s stories, share advice, and offer compassion to each other.
In the end, the goal of Al-Anon is for each member to learn how to overcome codependency and live their own life. It’s still possible for someone to love their addict family member. But, they must learn how to accept the things that are out of their control.

This is why Alateen exists. It’s a subsection of Al-Anon that’s specifically designed for young people.
Alateen meetings are different from Al-Anon meetings. There is more of an emphasis on education. Meeting facilitators teach the kids why addiction occurs. They spend time with each child to help them understand that their parent’s condition is not their fault.
It’s a great resource for young people, and meetings take place in many cities around the United States.
