Oak Harbor, Washington Addiction Resources and Treatment Options

“What was so painful about Amy’s (Amy Winehouse) death is that I know that there is something I could have done. I could have passed on to her the solution that was freely given to me. Don’t pick up a drink or drug, one day at a time. It sounds so simple; it actually is simple but it isn’t easy; it requires incredible support and fastidious structuring.”

~ Russell Brand

Alcohol Poisoning and Drug Overdose Help in Oak Harbor

If you suspect that you or a loved one has overdosed on drugs or has alcohol poisoning, it’s best to get professional medical help as quickly as possible. In case of an emergency, always call 911.

Washington state has a Good Samaritan Law, so you cannot be prosecuted for drug use, possession of drugs, or underage drinking if you call 911 to seek emergency medical help for yourself or someone else experiencing an overdose. Never let fear of the law keep you from seeking professional help for a drug overdose or alcohol poisoning.

The opioid epidemic in the US becomes more newsworthy and claim more lives every day. Opioid addiction - and therefore opioid overdose - is a growing danger all over the country. If you or a loved one regularly use heroin or other opioids, it’s a good idea to prepare yourself or those you’re often with to respond in case of an emergency.

The U.S. FDA has approved two drugs - Narcan and Evzio - for the immediate treatment of heroin overdoses until emergency medical help can arrive.

You are at risk for overdosing if you ever use heroin or other opioids. If this is the case, you should keep one of these drugs on hand and regularly review the proper usage with someone who is likely to find you quickly in case of an overdose. This way, they are less likely to panic under pressure.

Even if someone administers Narcan or Evzio, they should also call emergency medical personnel. These treatments are not meant to be the only response in case of an overdose, but they will give you more time to allow medical professionals to respond. The hospitals you can call in case of a drug overdose in Oak Harbor are listed above.

Cocaine overdoses can also kill a user very rapidly, and again, any user is at risk. If you or a loved one has overdosed, call 911 immediately.

Once you have called 911 and are waiting for trained medical professionals to help, there are three things you can do for a loved one:

  1. Apply a cold compress to the person who has overdosed. This will help lower their body temperature to a safe level.
  2. If the person is experiencing seizures, try to move sharp objects or furniture away from them so they do not injure themselves. Lower them to the floor and keep their head far from hard objects. Do not try to restrain them, and if possible, ensure they have nothing in their mouth.
  3. Stay with the person until help arrives, and follow the instructions of the emergency line operator. Remain calm.

Prescription drugs take many different forms, and so do the problems that result from overdosing on prescription drugs. Your best bet if you think that you or someone with you is overdosing on a prescription medication is to call 911.

You can also call your local poison control center for more information on what to do during a prescription drug overdose in Oak Harbor or for other drug-related information. Often, the poison control center is aware of potentially harmful strains of drugs that you would otherwise be accustomed to.

It’s important to be completely honest with whoever you talk to at the poison control center, just as you would need to be completely honest in talking to the police or other emergency personnel.

Inpatient vs. Outpatient Addiction Treatment Options

Because addiction treatment should be so personalized to the patient and their addiction, there are many decisions to be made along the road to recovery. Once you’ve decided to get professional help for your addiction or alcoholism, the first of these decisions is the type of treatment you think is best suited to your problem. In this case, you can choose inpatient or outpatient treatment. Once you’ve chosen between the two, you can decide if you’re looking for addiction treatment within Oak Harbor or somewhere farther from home.

The first step to deciding what kind of treatment is best for you is learning more about each one.

Inpatient treatment is what most people imagine when they hear the term “rehab”. Inpatient rehab involves a patient living within a treatment facility for the duration of the first - and often hardest - part of their recovery.

Many inpatient facilities, or inpatient rehab centers, offer medicated detox programs and intensive counseling programs. Inpatient programs are the most structured and provide the least independence for patients, which is sometimes necessary for recovery.

Inpatient treatment is cited as the most successful recovery option for those recovering from drug and alcohol abuse. This means that of all those seeking treatment for addiction or alcoholism, those who complete an inpatient program are least likely to relapse. Sometimes, time away from your everyday life coupled with the constant attention of trained medical professionals is exactly what you need to reclaim your life from the grip of addiction or alcoholism.

There are many options for inpatient treatment programs around the country, and some are closer to Oak Harbor than others. There are also quite a few reasons that inpatient rehab may or may not be right for you. It’s important to learn as much as you can about this option and be sure you understand it fully before deciding on an action plan. The methods you choose to recover can make or break your future sobriety success.

Often, recovering addicts or alcoholics choose inpatient programs because they provide:

  • Constant supervision. This decreases the likelihood of experiencing a medical emergency during the withdrawal process and lowers the likelihood of a relapse during your stay.
  • Structure. Inpatient treatment programs provide recovering patients with a full schedule of activities and therapies. This means that patients have less time to worry about the substance they were abusing or addicted to and more time to think about the positive habits and concepts that they’re learning every day.
  • Time away. Often, addicts and alcoholics need to remove themselves from their day to day life, friends, or other factors contributing to their problem to really focus on their recovery. An inpatient program allows them to do just that.
  • Support. In an inpatient facility, you receive around-the-clock care and support from trained professionals. This can help ease withdrawal symptoms, distract from cravings, and keep you on track when the going gets tough. Overall, this is one of the ways inpatient rehab prevents patients from relapsing during the most crucial recovery period.

Others opt out of inpatient rehab because of the:

  • Time. Attending inpatient treatment means taking time off of school, work, or other obligations. Patients aren’t usually allowed to come and go from the facility, and have a tight schedule full of therapy and other activities.
  • Removal from Support System. For many people, being away from their friends and family during treatment can be difficult. In inpatient facilities, patients have limited, supervised contact with anyone outside the facility in the hopes of cutting off all contact with anyone who would encourage the patient to relapse.
  • Money. Inpatient treatment tends to be all-inclusive, so you’re paying for things such as room and board and food in addition to the treatment itself. This can seem pricey to some, but many of the costs are payments you would be making either way.

It’s true that inpatient treatment has the highest success rates of any recovery method, but it’s important that each patient weighs their options and decides what’s best for them as an individual. The best route will depend on the type and severity of the addiction.

Unlike inpatient rehab, outpatient treatment programs do not involve the patient staying overnight within the facility. Outpatient rehab means that the recovering addict continues to live independently, but comes to the rehab facility for therapy appointments or other recovery-related activities.

Despite being less successful overall than inpatient treatment, outpatient treatment works well for many. An intensive program with frequent check-ins, though, is often ideal to truly overcome alcoholism or an addiction.

Just like inpatient treatment, outpatient rehab differs greatly between different facilities and programs. If you decide that outpatient addiction treatment is for you, you’ll have more decisions to make to choose the exact facility.

If you don’t know if outpatient rehab is the way to go for you, consider the reasons others have chosen for or against it.

Often, people choose outpatient rehab because of:

  • Time. Someone can complete an outpatient program while continuing to go to work or school and otherwise continue their normal life.
  • Money. Outpatient rehab tends to be cheaper than inpatient treatment because the patient pays just for treatment.
  • Support System. Those with supportive friends and families often choose outpatient treatment so that they can continue to be around their loved ones as they recover.

Others decide that outpatient treatment is not for them because of the possibility of:

  • Unsupervised Time. Any time spent outside of a treatment facility during recovery opens up the recovering addict to the possibility of seeking out and using their drug of choice. Outpatient treatment provides plenty of unsupervised time for recovering addicts to become relapsing addicts.
  • Unenforced Appointments. Outpatient rehab patients are on their own when it comes to making it to appointments on time and there are any number of obstacles that could come up and prevent you from making this appointment. Without it, your willpower could begin to crumble and you could easily, once again, become a relapsing addict instead of a recovering addict.

Remember: Deciding that you want a treatment program with more structure than outpatient rehab doesn’t mean you’re weak. It just means that you want to get all the help you can to make your recovery as successful as possible.

Free Addiction Resources Near Oak Harbor

For those just beginning to realize that they’re on their way to becoming addicts, those who have already completed an inpatient or outpatient program and are still seeking support and accountability, and those who simply want free recovery help, there are options other that can be beneficial.

In many cities, there are groups that meet regularly to to provide encouragement, accountability, and hope for alcoholics, addicts, and their loved ones. These include Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Al Anon, and Alateen, and you can find all of them near Oak Harbor, WA.

The oldest and most widespread support group for alcoholics is Alcoholics Anonymous, or AA. Participants in this group meet regularly and follow the 12 steps to recovery. Each member is guided by a sponsor, or an older member who is further along in their journey through the 12 steps. The goal is for each sponsored member to then become a sponsor themselves once they’ve advanced.

While attending AA meetings can be uncomfortable at first, many people have found them very helpful once they’ve found a group that they like.

The 12 steps of AA are:

  1. We admitted that we were powerless over alcohol; that our lives had become unmanageable.
  2. We came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
  3. We made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood him.
  4. We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
  5. We admitted to God, ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
  6. We were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
  7. We humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
  8. We made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
  9. We made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except where doing so would injure them or others.
  10. We continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted to it.
  11. We sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
  12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Often, those who love an addict or alcoholic are just as affected by the addiction as the addict or alcoholic themselves. These friends and family members watch as someone they care about becomes someone they don’t know, putting themselves and others in harm’s way or neglecting them completely.

These friends and family members may also need the support of others who have been through what they’re going through.

For this reason, there are support groups for these loved ones of addicts and alcoholics as well:

  • Al Anon for those of all ages who want to learn about the disease of addiction and healthy coping mechanisms for loving or living with an addict
  • Alateen for children and teenagers who need to learn to come to terms with a loved one’s addiction, learn what addiction is and why it’s not their fault, and learn methods of breaking the generational cycles that could lead to them following in a family member’s footsteps.
