What Should You Do In Case Of An Overdose?

With drug overdoses at an all-time high thanks to the ever-worsening opioid epidemic, there’s never been a more important time to know what to do in case of an overdose.

Information on What to do for an Overdose

Whether it’s legal drugs like alcohol, illicit ones like heroin and cocaine, or even prescription medications like Xanax or Adderall, taking too much of any addictive substance can lead to serious physical and mental harm. Added to that, sometimes the damages can even be permanent.

That’s why it’s crucial to remember that every second counts. And the longer you wait to call emergency services, the worse their chances of a full recovery – or even survival – will be.

So, if you suspect an overdose, call 9-1-1 immediately. They’ll be able to give you lifesaving advice on how to care for someone who’s in the middle of an overdose as well as send an emergency vehicle to your location.

Your friend or family member will likely be transported to the local hospital.

But before you can call emergency services, the very first step is identifying the signs of an overdose in the first place. It's important to recognize that not all overdoses look the same. The signs and symptoms largely depend on the type of substance itself as well as how much was taken.

Despite a significant lull in popularity (a 50% decline in U.S. consumption) from 2006 to 2010, cocaine has become much more popular in recent years.

And consequently, as this dangerous and highly trafficked stimulant becomes more popular, the rate of cocaine overdoses is bound to increase along with it. In 2014 alone cocaine caused around 5,800 overdose deaths in the United States.

Spotting the signs of a cocaine overdose can be tricky, especially because of how many fillers and adulterants are mixed with this drug. According to MedlinePlus, some of the most common symptoms of an overdose include:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin
  • Fast or difficulty breathing
  • Death

In addition to being one of the most notorious street drugs available today, heroin is also known for being one of the deadliest. And thanks to increasing levels of purity as well as cutting this drug with the incredibly powerful opioid known as Fentanyl, the danger behind using heroin is getting worse with each passing year.

Information on Heroin Overdose

To put some numbers on the problem, there was a 533% spike in heroin overdose deaths from 2002 to 2016 – when over 13 thousand people died from this drug. The numbers for 2017 aren't out yet, but experts estimate that well over 15 thousand Americans are expected to die the same way.

Knowing the signs of a heroin overdose, then, is critical. Some of the most common ones to watch out for include:

AIRWAYS AND LUNGS

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing

EYES, EARS, NOSE, AND THROAT

  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue

HEART AND BLOOD

  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse
  • SKIN
  • Bluish-colored nails and lips

STOMACH AND INTESTINES

  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines

NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements

Prescription drugs are tricky. While they’re technically legal if you have a valid prescription for them, these medications have increasingly become a serious source of abuse in the past several decades.

Two prescription drug types in particular, benzodiazepines and prescription opioids, are the most problematic.

For prescription drugs like benzodiazepines (like Klonopin), WebMD points out a couple of symptoms that may appear when someone is overdosing. They include:

  • Drowsiness
  • Confusion
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Weakness
  • Slurred speech
  • Lack of coordination
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Coma

With prescription opioids like OxyContin, the signs of an overdose are a little bit different. The CDC lists some symptoms to watch out for as:

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Pale, blue, or cold skin

Meth, Crystal Meth, Ice, Glass – whatever you call it, this dangerous drug is still 100% deadly. Whether it’s the hellish psychosis that can come about as a result of using, the incessant pestering of imaginary bugs crawling under the skin, or the very real dangers of overdosing, meth is one nasty drug.

If you suspect someone is overdosing on meth, they’ll likely show a number of common symptoms including:

  • Agitation
  • Chest pain
  • Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Very high body temperature
  • Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
  • Paranoia
  • Seizures
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Stroke

Last but certainly not least, alcohol is without a doubt the most commonly abused drug in the world. After all, it’s legal to use and can even be found in gas stations, corner stores, and practically anywhere food goods are sold.

Information on Alcohol Poisoning

But despite just how common this drug might be, alcohol poisoning can be incredibly deadly.

In fact, the CDC points out that an average of 6 people die every single day from alcohol poisoning in the U.S. alone.

Some common symptoms to watch out for include:

  • Constant vomiting
  • Blackouts
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Hypothermia
  • Stupor
  • Seizures
  • Confusion
  • Impaired coordination
  • Shallow or irregular breathing
  • Skin color changes
Buhl Resource Profile

12-Step Meetings Happening Around Buhl

One of the best and most accessible addiction resources in Idaho and around the country is what’s known as a 12-step meeting. These support groups are built on the foundational principles of recovery developed by Bill Wilson and Dr. Robert Smith in 1935 when they founded Alcoholics Anonymous.

From there, the power of the 12-steps spread to other addictions and problem areas. Today, there are over 30 different 12-step groups, from Clutterers Anonymous all the way to Underearners Anonymous.

These meetings can be incredibly helpful for a number of reasons.

First, they’re a great way to stay connected with others which, in turn, can help promote sobriety.

They’re also an excellent way of building up a support network that can be critical for preventing a relapse from occurring further down the line. The more people you have in your network, the more you can incorporate them into your relapse prevention plan.

And finally, these groups are widely available, free to attend, and of course, 100% confidential.

It isn’t any wonder that 12-step meetings like AA and NA have literally millions of members around the world.

And best of all, there are plenty of 12-step groups to choose from that regularly meet around the Buhl, Idaho area too.

SMART Meetings located in or around Buhl

The advances in drug and alcohol addiction recovery science have been nothing short of astounding in the last decades. For those people who are not compatible with a faith-based organization, such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, there is a newer organization to consider named SMART.

SMART, which stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training, has a 4-point plan that targets all forms of addiction and provides innovative tools and knowledge to help combat them. If you are addicted to drugs or alcohol, and trust science in a personal way, SMART is the best aftercare support meetings to attend.

SMART does not host any meetings right in the city of Buhl. The closest is in Twin Falls, with another one in Boise if you do not mind a longer trip.

Finding a Treatment Center That’s Right For You

While 12-step programs like AA and NA can be incredibly helpful when it comes to maintaining sobriety, it often takes using these programs concurrently with a professional treatment program to truly recover from an addiction.

For most people, that will mean a combination of detoxification (to help the body get through withdrawals safely) and rehabilitation (to retrain the brain to learn how to live without having to use drugs).

Recovering addicts will also need to determine what level of rehab treatment they’ll need in order to successfully recover. In general, there are three major types of rehabilitation: inpatient, outpatient, and intensive outpatient.

  • Inpatient Treatment – These programs typically last for around 28 days and offer the most intensive form of treatment. Patients are required to eat, sleep, and live on campus, giving them the time and space to truly focus on their recovery. Of course, the tradeoff is needing to commit all of their time to such a program, making work or schooling during this time impossible in most cases.
  • Outpatient Treatment – A more flexible type of treatment, this program usually features evening sessions where patients can move towards recovery without having to take time off of work or school. These programs also tend to last a bit longer too – around 3 months. While it may sound much more manageable, it also opens up patients to a higher risk of relapse as they won’t be living in a sober facility.
  • Intensive Outpatient Treatment – Also known as intensive outpatient programs or IOPs, this type of treatment is a form of outpatient, but patients tend to meet more frequently and for a longer amount of time in each session. It’s perfect for someone who wants flexibility but also needs a greater degree of care as well.

It can be hard to know what treatment is right for you at first. And as is so often the case, you’ll likely prefer to be in one kind of program when, in fact, you actually need another.

That’s why it’s so helpful to talk to an addiction professional about finding the program to treat your individual needs. They’ll be able to offer an expert opinion on where you’ll thrive the most and will be most likely to succeed.

While there are a few facilities nearby Buhl, Idaho, there is always something to be said about travelling out of town to get treatment.

There are a couple of benefits to doing so. First, it opens up the range of possibilities and levels of treatment quality. A nearby facility might only be twenty minutes down the road, but if partnering with them means you're at a higher risk of relapse, it isn't worth the gamble.

Finding the best treatment that truly is right for you should be priority number one.

On top of that, travelling for drug rehab can also help you break old bad habits simply because you’re separated from your old life. And that separation from the people, the places, and the things of your old life can be incredibly empowering.

There are plenty of other reasons to travel outside your home town for rehab too. In the end, you have to do what’s right for your future, not what’s right for right now.

Did you know that you can get help paying for your addiction treatment? There was once a time when people had to cover these costs out of their own pockets. However, this is no longer the case at all. Please visit SAMHSA.gov, and you can get all the information you need about the changes that have taken place over the last several years.

Some of the most exciting changes come from the fact that legislation regarding addiction treatment has changed quite a bit. Now, nearly all insurance providers are legally required to help cover treatment costs when it comes to rehabilitation.

And that can make a huge difference when it comes to what you’re paying for out of pocket. Even still, it’s always helpful to verify your insurance coverage before picking out a specific facility or program.

In the end, treatment has never been cheaper than it is today. And that’s just one more reason to get help now.

Alcohol and Drug Detox in Buhl

When you finally get yourself in the place to start your recovery from an addiction, your first step should almost always be an alcohol or drug detox program. While rehab programs provide the main body of tools and skills needed to stay sober, it is impossible to get the most out of it with the uncomfortable nature of detoxing to contend with as well. Attempting to quit by yourself, also known as going cold turkey, is almost never possible without professionals on hand to manage it successfully.

The first reason for this is the extreme nature of withdrawal, where your body desperately wants the drink or drug, and is unable to have it. Withdrawal is known as one of the most difficult things to experience, especially if it is alcohol or opioids. Without constantly being surrounded by people to help you navigate the worst of it, the chances are exponentially higher that you will break down and use just to get those feelings to stop. Drug and alcohol detox programs also do not allow you to leave the facility at any time during the program, so slip ups are avoided.

Medicated detox may also be necessary, depending on which substance you abuse, and how often the abuse occurs. Medicated detox is where the attending staff provides you with supplemental medicines to help curb the most extreme aspects of the withdrawal. Without these medications, it is actually possible for the detox attempt to end in seizures or even death.

Alcohol & Drug Detox Facilities in Buhl

Given that there are no drug or alcohol detox or rehab facilities located right in Buhl, the best recourse for someone with an emergency case of withdrawal is a local hospital. This also requires a trip to Twin Falls, since Buhl is not large enough to warrant one directly in the city. Twin Falls has seven hospitals to choose from if the withdrawal gets too bad to handle on your own.

Northpoint Recovery

Given the lack of drug and alcohol detox and rehab programs in Buhl, travel is always going to be a necessity. While it is a little over 100 miles from Buhl, Northpoint Recovery is well worth the drive. Northpoint Recovery is an inpatient detox and rehab program that has treatment programs for both drugs and alcohol. Our program is 28 days long and starts off with a week-long detox program. Following successful completion of the detox phase, the remaining three weeks is dedicated to the rehab phase.

Health Insurance

One of the most important factors when selecting an inpatient drug or alcohol detox and rehab program is whether or not they accept your health insurance. Professional addiction recovery is expensive, and cannot be shouldered by many people who need it. One of the biggest tragedies is to lose someone to addiction when their only obstacle was being unable to pay for it.

Northpoint Recovery understands the importance of accepting as many health insurance carriers and plans as possible. As such, we have expended much effort to find the many carriers and networks that we are a part of. We accept most major policies and carriers, and are adding new ones to our roster as often as possible. If you want to check to see if we accept your health insurance you can visit our website or call us up.
